Education Review Office (ERO)

Hi all, we had ERO visiting the school, checking documentation, meeting with the Senior management team and meeting with students.

Te Ara Huarau is the new evaluation approach that the Education Review Office (ERO) is using in our school.

This a developmental approach to evaluation where ERO and our school work together over time rather than one off reviews that happened previously.

Te Ara Huarau is used in most English-medium state and state-integrated schools.

ERO maintains a regular review programme to evaluate and report on the education and care of young people in the schools.

Our school worked alongside ERO to write our Profile Report. This type of report will only happen once as part of our initial engagement with Te Ara Huarau.

The profile report reflects our strategic goals and a shared evaluation focus one or more areas that are important to us as we work together to improve outcomes for all our learners.

ERO, like us, have a strong focus on equity and excellence. Future reporting will show our progress and achievement towards meeting the goals we have set.

A Board Assurance Report that shows how we are meeting regulatory and legislative Requirements has also been published.

Emmanuel Christian School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • students will make progress in their learning and develop skills for life in a Christ centred culturally inclusive learning culture
  • high expectations and aspirations for every student
  • excellence in education for all students by ensuring barrier free access towards gaining foundation skills in language, literacy and numeracy.

The school expects to see:

  • students well supported to apply concepts of wellbeing within their Christian faith, including interactions with others and their own sense of self esteem
  • teachers integrating new understandings of culturally responsive practices to better support students in their learning
  • increased levels of progress and achievement for all students across the school.

You can find the rest of this Profile Report now published on ERO’s website.

As a board we take this opportunity to thank our awesome team and their faithful recognised hard work.
We thank the Lord for his provision, our teaching team and leadership and His obvious hand in this resulting published report.

Blessings,

John van Ameyde on behalf of the Board of Trustees

Traffic Safety – Papanui Club Carpark

The Papanui Club has now installed STOP signs and have painted a yellow line at the exit of their driveway (before the footpath).  Please abide by this when exiting so that children stay safe.  There have been a number of very close calls where children have nearly been hit by cars exiting the Papanui Club driveway in the mornings.

Please also ensure your children always use the Pedestrian Crossing to the school gate in the mornings. Children have been seen running across the driveway from the carpark and even walking across the driveway with their parents over 10 metres away from the Pedestrian Crossing.

Thank you.

Year 3 – 10 Parent Teacher Conferences

On Tuesday 1st August we will have the oportunity for you to meet with your child(ren)’s teacher to discuss their progress over the start of 2023. This date is the postponement as we had to move the day due to the water outage.

Bookings can be made online at: Parent Teacher Meeting Bookings

Please book by the end of Monday, 31st July.

Kia orāna kotou

As you might already know from last week’s newsletter, Thursday of week 6 (24th August) is our school’s Cultural Day.

As part of the celebrations, we plan to set up the hall with various stalls representing some of the cultures in our school that afternoon. For this, we need your support. If you are willing to help with the event, whether it is providing materials, ideas, or coming to run a stall, please fill in the form which would have been sent home this week and kindly return it to your child’s classroom teacher or drop it off at the office by **Monday 31 July. For those who are able to help, we will have a chance to meet together to discuss plans, which will be happening on **Wednesday 2 August at 2:50 p.m. in K5 classroom. Hope to see you then. (** There was a typo in the notice/form that was sent out.)

On a related note, we are celebrating Cook Islands Language Week nationwide next week. Did you know that there are three distinct Polyesian languages spoken in the Cook Islands? Check out our school notice boards to find out more… Also, there is a Cook Islands Language Week 2023 Presentation in Google doc. If you are interested to learn more about Cook Islands, please click here  for the presentation.

Ngā mihi

Givealittle for the Chalmers Family

Many in our school community will be aware that the Chalmers family, who have two children here at Emmanuel, lost their husband and father to a sudden stroke over the holidays. Matthew was only 43.

A Givealittle page has been set up for Chieko Chalmers and her two children and we wanted to share this with the school community as we know many of you would love to show your support and love for the Chalmers family at this time.

News from our Library

Congratulations to the winners of the Christchurch City Libraries promotion!  Vouchers for the Dove Bookshop were awarded to Joel McArthur, Georgia Luke, John Jay Chiu and Lucas Ling on the last day of Term 2. I hope they enjoyed buying some pre-loved books for the holidays.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Dove Bookshop, situated at the far end of the Bishopdale Mall, is a treasure trove of wonderful, cheap, pre-loved books. It’s large and airy and well-laid out, with very helpful staff. I often shop there for the library, and they are very generous with their discounts. Many times I have returned with 14 or 15 books for $3 each.

Please support them, and mention our school. We are certainly on their radar. A great supply of adults’ books, too!

Lucas and Marcus Ling now have their Christchurch City Library membership, and along with many other school families, will enjoy their great eResources too.

Any questions, please let me know.

I am loving the enthusiasm of the children in our school library space. Many come in at lunchtimes to play games, draw, browse and read.
There were 1329 books issued in the month of June (to the 28th). Now that’s satisfying.

Scholastic Book Orders

Once per term each student will receive a brochure for the book club to bring home.

If you would like to order any of the books, this can be done online on LOOP.
For your first time you will need to register in order to make a Book Club LOOP login.

We cannot take orders/payment via the Office so please order online.
Instructions are on the back of the brocure.  You will have approximately two weeks to place your order.

Once orders close, they will be sent to school and will come home with your child. On all orders the school earns 15% in scholastic rewards which benefits our school library.

Emmanuel Christian School does not endorse all material that is available for purchase from Scholastic Book Club.  Please use your discernment when picking reading material for your child.

Issue 5 orders close: Tuesday, 1st August

If you didn’t receive a brochure we have some at the Office and they are also available online on LOOP.
