ECS Update Term 3, Week 1 – Friday 21st July 2023

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers,

The first week of Term has flown by and it has been great to see some sun. I have had the privilege of joining with some of Year 1 – 6 classes for their swimming lessons and it is great to see the enthusiasm that the students have to give everything a go right from our very new students through to our Year 6 seniors.

Again there is a number of notices for you to read below as always schools are busy places to be.

Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support, it is a blessing to work in this community!

Ngā mihi nui,

Tom Littlejohn

about what you could do to help out on this day, please contact Bronwyn van Mechgelen bronwyn@emmanuelchristian.school.nz
or Christine Ng (Liu) christine@emmanuelchristian.school.nz or leave your contact details at the school office. We look forward to hearing from you!

Here are some highlights of last year’s Culture Day….

Givealittle for the Chalmers Family

Many in our school community will be aware that the Chalmers family who have two children here at Emmanuel, lost their husband and father to a sudden stroke over the holidays. Matthew was only 43.

A Givealittle page has been set up for Chieko Chalmers and her two children and we wanted to share this with the school community as we know many of you would love to show your support and love for the Chalmers family at this time.

Traffic Safety – Papanui Club Carpark

If you use the Papanui Club carpark to drop off and pick up your children we urge you to be mindful when exiting the carpark driveway onto Sawyers Arms Road.

As from today, the Papanui Club has made this a STOP when exiting.

Please abide by this when exiting so that children stay safe.

Also please bear in mind that a lot of children walk and scooter along this path to and from their schools (not just Emmanuel but Cotswold and others) and the footpath to the left of the exit driveway is partially obscured by bushes so it can be hard to see children coming until they are suddently on the footpath crossing the driveway, so please advance slowly to the footpath and STOP before continuing across the footpath and out onto Sawyers Arms Road.

Thank you.

2024 Enrolments

Enrolments for the 2024 academic year are currently open and close on Friday 25th August 2023.  If you have a child or know someone else who does looking to apply for Emmanuel Christian School in 2024 can we please ask that you ensure this process is completed.

Year 3 & 4 Swimming Sport

Our Year 3 & 4 Swimming Sports is being held on Thursday, 3 August at the Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre. The aim of this event is for our Year 3 & 4 students to participate in a number of fun races and to use the skills they have learnt throughout swimming lessons.

The Year 3 & 4 students will be travelling by bus leaving at 12:10pm and arriving at Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre at 12:30pm then returning to school at 2:30pm.

Students will be able to choose the races they would like to compete in. Students have the choice between width races in different strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, kicking, & some fun events). Also in each of the width races flutter boards are available for those who wish to use them.

If you have any queries around what students are entered into please contact their class teacher.

We require parent assistance at the pool for this day to be a success. If you are able to help, please let Mr LJ know via email tom@emmanuelchristian.school.nz.

Students are to wear house colours where possible or the PE uniform, and shoes. Please ensure your child has plenty of food and drink, their togs and a towel.

News from our Library

Congratulations to the winners of the Christchurch City Libraries promotion!  Vouchers for the Dove Bookshop were awarded to Joel McArthur, Georgia Luke, John Jay Chiu and Lucas Ling on the last day of Term 2. I hope they enjoyed buying some pre-loved books for the holidays.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Dove Bookshop, situated at the far end of the Bishopdale Mall, is a treasure trove of wonderful, cheap, pre-loved books. It’s large and airy and well-laid out, with very helpful staff. I often shop there for the library, and they are very generous with their discounts. Many times I have returned with 14 or 15 books for $3 each.

Please support them, and mention our school. We are certainly on their radar. A great supply of adults’ books, too!

Lucas and Marcus Ling now have their Christchurch City Library membership, and along with many other school families, will enjoy their great eResources too.

Any questions, please let me know.

I am loving the enthusiasm of the children in our school library space. Many come in at lunchtimes to play games, draw, browse and read.
There were 1329 books issued in the month of June (to the 28th). Now that’s satisfying.

Scholastic Book Orders

Once per term each student will receive a brochure for the book club to bring home.

If you would like to order any of the books, this can be done online on LOOP.  For your first time you will need to register in order to make a Book Club LOOP login.

We cannot take orders/payment via the Office so please order online.  Instructions are on the back of the brocure.  You will have approximately two weeks to place your order.

Once orders close, they will be sent to school and will come home with your child. On all orders the school earns 15% in scholastic rewards which benefits our school library.

Emmanuel Christian School does not endorse all material that is available for purchase from Scholastic Book Club.  Please use your discernment when picking reading material for your child.

Issue 5 orders close: Tuesday, 1st August

If you didn’t receive a brochure we have some at the Office and they are also available online on LOOP.
