Cohort Entry at Emmanuel Christian School

The early years at school are so foundational, which is why we utilize a cohort entry approach to nurture each child as they begin their learning journey with us.

What is Cohort Entry?

Cohort entry is when new entrant children start school together in groups throughout the year rather than individually on their fifth birthday. The Ministry of Education and the Education Review Office encourage schools to adopt this approach to foster community and smooth transitions.

How Does Cohort Entry Work?

New entrants start school in cohorts after they turn five years old.

There are two entry points per term:

1. First Day of Term
2. Mid-Point Entry (usually the Monday of the 6th week)

These specific dates are aligned with the Ministry of Education guidelines.

What are the Benefits of Cohort Entry?

Cohort entry provides a settled, structured start to school routines. The Education Review Office highlights the following advantages:

• Enhances Learning Environments: Teachers can deliver uninterrupted learning without continuous individual start-date disruptions throughout the term.
• Builds Whānau & Community Connections: Group visits allow parents and whānau to connect with one another and integrate into the Emmanuel Christian School community.
• Improves Transition Planning: Structured intake dates help teachers and early childhood providers coordinate seamless transitions for every child.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

My child turns 5 the day after a cohort entry date. Can they begin a day earlier with the cohort?

Unfortunately, no. Under New Zealand regulations, children cannot legally attend school until they turn 5 years old.

Will cohort entry affect my ECE 20 Hours Free funding?

No. Children can remain enrolled at their ECE service until the scheduled cohort entry date following their fifth birthday, continuing to receive ECE funding until they start school. Please inform your ECE provider of your confirmed Emmanuel Christian School start date.

Will my child start as Year 1 or Year 0?

• Term 1 Enrolments (Start of term or mid-term) are classified as Year 1 for that calendar year.
• Term 2 Onwards Enrolments are generally classified as Year 0 for the remainder of that year, moving into Year 1 the following year.

We engage in open discussion with whānau at transition points to determine the best path forward for your child, considering both academic and social readiness.

Our new entrant teachers create a caring, Christ-centred environment where every child is valued. You can support your child’s transition by encouraging independence and social confidence in the following ways:

• Social & Emotional Growth: Showing kindness and respect, using good manners, sharing, listening carefully to others, and having the courage to try new things.
• Self-Management Skills: Tidying up personal items, carrying their own bag, opening lunchboxes independently, using the bathroom properly, and managing their own clothes and shoes.
