Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I hope this message finds you well. My apologies for a weekend email, however, following some news items today I wanted to provide some clarity as we head into the week ahead.
You may have seen in the news today that the Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA) has planned strike action for next week. This action will affect Year 7 and 9 students on Tuesday, and Year 8 and 10 students on Wednesday in many secondary schools around the country.
I would like to reassure you that this strike action does not impact Emmanuel Christian School. Our school will be open as normal on both days, with classes running as usual. This is because the strike action involves members of the PPTA, and none of our teaching staff are members of this union.
At the same time, we are aware that the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI), which represents many primary and intermediate teachers, has also been holding strike ballots with its members. This may potentially lead to action that could affect schools on Thursday 23 October.
We will keep you informed as soon as further details are available and once the Emmanuel School Board has had the opportunity to consider any implications and make the necessary decisions. NZ Employment law means that we could receive as little as three calendar days’ notice of upcoming industrial action.
Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. We greatly appreciate the partnership we share with our families as we continue to provide a stable and caring learning environment for our students.
Warm regards,
Alistair
